US Coast Guard Public Information Assist Team - Risk Communications Training
The Public Information Assist Team offers baseline Risk Communication training covering Risk Communications theories, strategies and tactics. The curriculum is appropriate for full or part-time public information professionals who may need to communicate in a risk communications or crisis situation.
Training is offered in one of three time formats. Format one is an eight-hour session with a four-hour presentation in the morning, a one-hour lunch, and a three-hour workshop in the afternoon. Format two is a four-hour presentation without a workshop. Breaks are included every 60-90 minutes. Format three is a one-hour overview of Risk Communications theories and practices.
Attendees completing Formats 1 or 2 will be able to accomplish the following tasks:
DEFINE Risk Communications.
EXPLAIN how risk communication theory, practices, and knowledge are used to improve overall risk management.
EXPLAIN the skills, tools, techniques and key elements that should be used to effectively communicate risk information.
DESCRIBE how to develop a strategy for effective risk communication
DEVELOP responses to risk communication scenarios.
DESCRIBE the role of media in risk communications situations.
DEMONSTRATE effective risk communication techniques to use with the media.
DESCRIBE the three primary attributes of risk communication practices.
STATE the seven rules of risk communication.
IDENTIFY potential stake-holders and their role in the risk communication process.
DESCRIBE communication methods and tools to identify, prioritize and receive input from the community.
Requesting units/agencies are asked to fund travel, hotel, and per diem for two trainers at the federal government rate. Training requests are submitted via email or telephone to either:

Please provide primary and secondary training date preferences, location and a tentative attendee roster with names and agencies. Class size should not exceed 20 people
Training should be scheduled at least one month in advance. Operational commitments take precedence over scheduled training.
